Windowsills

When our little band first started out, we cut our teeth playing a circuit of coffee shops all around Vancouver. At one such show, an audience member approached us wanting to buy a CD, and said something like “so you’re The Window Sills?”. That tickled us enough that we decided to call our first album just that, paying tribute to that moment right on the front cover. Back then the songs were flowing from all sorts of directions, so we chose to frame each one on its unique window sill, so it would feel at home among its diverse neighbours. This is the album that put us on the map, and still continues to be the crowd favourite.

Animals Are People Too

We never set out to be a folk band. Now, we obviously did appreciate acoustic instrumentation, yet many of our influences lay in alternative rock, punk, and experimental genres. So when it came time to do a follow up to our first album, we pushed in directions that spoke louder to the kinds of music we loved listening to. Animals Are People Too was a statement about how we put human qualities on everything that surrounds us, especially animals. Much of what is on this album is an introspective dive into why we make art, what community means, the purpose of death, and the relationships we have with ourselves. At this point we were starting to find our voice, setting the stage for more of what we really wanted to say.

The Secret Album

With both of our previous albums we came to the table with an overabundance of songs, from which we collectively chose with the guidance of Jake (our co-producer). The second time we did this (for Animals Are People Too) we were a little heartbroken to see more than half of our ideas (the ones that veered too far from our theme) go into the proverbial bin. And so we decided to take it upon ourselves to make an album of ‘b-sides’. The process was a bit unconventional, recording in a half constructed studio (ie. a construction zone), as well as forgoing any kind of rehearsals. We again enlisted the help of friends, and looking in on the sessions would have seemed like a bunch of microphones set up and Tom waving his arms around like a conductor. What was expected to be a collection of odds and ends ended up surprising us all and became our personal favourite album for a while. This album was never released, nor will it ever be. It was always meant to be an exclusive album for just our most devoted fans, and we’re excited that we can offer something special to only a few. You may be wondering how you can get one… If you own all three of our official releases, be it physical or digital, you are entitled to own a respective copy of The Secret Album. The physical copies of this album are limited and numbered collectors items.

Sail Away (unreleased)

It’s hard to know what to say about this album. It’s heavy for us, but also beautiful and ocean sized (pun intended). There are several layered stories here. The most obvious story is about leaving your home town, which we both did in recent years. Beginning with a need to leave everything and everyone, mourning all that has been lost, and inevitably coming back to what held us up in the first place: community. A deeper layer to this album is that it follows the cycles of life. From the opening line of “open my eye…”, the excitement of being alive, to the increasing expectations, heaviness of responsibility, and ultimately returning to the source (death, rebirth). And yet another layer chronicles the unraveling and dramatic changes in our personal lives. Over six years in the making, this is TWW at our most vivid.
